Today we have applied our knowledge of halves and quarters of shapes to help us work out different times on a clock. After learning to spot o’clock and half past we were able to work out where quarter past would be because we could remember what a quarter of a circle looks like. It didn’t take us long to figure out how to read a quarter past twelve….lunchtime!

The children investigated different ways to colour in half the shape. They were not allowed to flip or rotate it. There are 13 ways to do it. They could help their friend. It was wonderful to hear mathematical language being used, such as rotation, symmetrical, left and right.

We played a game to help us learn about halves and quarters. Firstly, the children had to make playdoh cookies. Then they spun the spinner to see how many children they needed to share the cookie between. If there were two children, they cut it in half. If there were four children, they cut it into quarters. Muddles the monkey was there to help.
