We have been sorting materials into hard and soft properties and investigating which materials are better to use for a bed. After intense trialling and investigation, we unanimously voted for the soft materials!

This week, we were joined in class by Nyla’s great grandmother Marjorie, who came to talk to us about her experiences as a child during World War II. Marjorie, was just 11 years old when the war broke out. She talked to us about her experiences in the Anderson shelter, seeing the devastation that the bombs caused and how once, she remembers ducking from one shop doorway to another as shrapnel from our guns crashed down, so big that they could have killed her!

We learnt all about the Barrage balloons that lined the dock to slow down any German attack and how one floated down in flames not far from where she lives.

We heard all about the sirens in the cinema, Christmas dinners and presents and favourite sweets!

The children realised just how special our visitor was and really appreciated hearing her stories. We would all like to say a very big thank you and hope that you enjoyed it was much as we did.

We visited St Thomas’s Church today to look at the signs and symbols of the Christian faith as part of our RE topic. We learnt all about the symbolism of The Holy Bible, the cross, the dove and lighting candles, amongst other things. We finished off our trip by visiting the war memorial and saying a prayer with Reverend Nick to remember the soldiers who died during the wars.

We have had a busy week painting the seaside, making windmills, making deck chairs, drawing sail boats, designing postcards, making a beach hut collage, drawing shells and making 3D shells. Plus having fun in our temporary beach….Phew! After all that, we’re going to need a holiday! IMG_3446

Strangers

Following our talk about strangers, we have been drawing pictures of what strangers look like. We know that they have many different faces. They look old or young, happy or sad, they might look angry or be smiling. They are someone else’s grandparents sitting on a bench and ladies with ice creams in the park! No matter how kind and happy they look, if YOU don’t know them, they are strangers!

If a stranger comes to talk to you, shout “no”, run away and tell someone you trust.
